I am scrambling like crazy, trying to finish up my Final Portfolio project for my last college class. It’s due at midnight on Saturday. Tonight I am working on my artist’s statement. To be honest, I’ve never heard of an artist’s statement before tonight. When I looked up artist’s statement online, one of the descriptions I found was – “An artist’s statement (or artist statement) is an artist’s written description of their work. The brief verbal representation is about and in support of, his or her own work to give the viewer understanding. As such it aims to inform, connect with an art context, and present the basis for the work; it is therefore didactic, descriptive, or reflective in nature.” Thank you, Wikipedia.

I wanted to create a statement that also showed a piece of something I created so I used one of my favorite photos of Sera. First I composed the text, and then I went to PhotoShop. Below is my draft. Let me know what you think.  Please be kind.  The image below (or one similar to it) will be featured on one of the pages of my portfolio website.  I think it’s a little hard to read yet.

I think that it is a great statement. I really relate to it. I think that artists who also happen to have high IQ’s often get this idea early in life that they need to go into a math/science related career and neglect the creative side of themselves. My first college major was Engineering. However, artist create art because they are heavily driven to do so and they never feel fulfilled until they do. Animals are a great source of inspiration 🙂 I love your squirrel.
