Daily Prompt: The Luckiest (?) People

Who was the first person you encountered today? Write about him or her.  Photographers, artists, poets: show us PEOPLE.

The first person I encountered today was my truck-driving Hubby.  He came home around 10:00 a.m. after spending a rough week out.  He was sent out this week with a trainee.  A day or so into the week, his trainee ran into a family emergency and had to go home.  Hubby thought he was off the hook.  Then he got a phone call from Dispatch telling him that another trucker’s truck had broken down.  He needed to go rescue them.

It turns out that trucker #2 also had a trainee with him.  Hubby ended up with the second trainee.  When he trains, it ends up being more of a team-driving experience.  When drivers team-drive, one drives while the other one sleeps, and that way they drive around the clock.  I don’t know how they can call that a training experience.  If the trainee has a problem (has an accident with the truck or gets lost), Hubby would be asleep.  How can he be observing the trainee when he’s asleep? That doesn’t make any sense to me.

Training brings in a little extra money, but it’s not something I’d want to do.  They put two people into the cab of the truck, and they share each others’ living space for a week.  The truck has a bunk bed arrangement so sometimes they are asleep at the same time.  They eat together, and they spend the week in close proximity. The truck is Hubby’s home, and he’s made it as comfortable as he possibly can.  I would not want a stranger living in such a small space with me for a week.  I’m not that outgoing – that would be hard for me.

He called me this morning as I was waking up to tell me he was on his way home.  He told me he was also bringing along an unwelcome visitor – the flu.  It turns out that trainee #2 had the flu.  Poor Hubby.  He’s tired (he doesn’t sleep well when someone else is driving), he’s achy, he’s coughing, and his nose is running.

So I’ve tucked him up into bed after a hot shower, a bowlful of chicken noodle soup and a dose of cold and flu medicine.  Hopefully he’ll sleep the day away and feel better for it.  And, hopefully the flu will pass the rest of us by.
