Donna Reads: Ex Games by Stella Rhys

exTaylor Simms has been dumped by her fiancé. She’s left with an apartment she can’t afford and a wedding that she must cancel. She takes a second job, and she’s struggling to get by day to day when her ex’s brother shows up. Mason Leo is the brother that Taylor’s ex, Aaron Leo, has always been envious of. Aaron resents everything about Mason, and he’s convinced Taylor that Mason is a no-good womanizer. Mason hands Taylor an invitation to Aaron’s wedding – Aaron is marrying Mason’s ex. Mason and Taylor decide to team up as a fake couple to try to stop the wedding.

This ended up taking a different path than I thought it would. I thought it would be a romantic comedy or at least a story of two people who hated each other and then discovered that they really loved one another. Instead it had all sorts of melodrama in it that I didn’t think quite fit in the story. There was cheating, lying and a miscarriage that I didn’t feel added to the story. I liked the romance and the humorous parts of the story; I could have done without the drama. It wasn’t necessary and it left me feeling unsettled after the HEA ending. I liked Mason; I liked him a lot. I couldn’t understand why Taylor was so stupid as to believe all the nonsense that Aaron fed her about his brother. He clearly was the better man. Aaron was just a douchebag.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I liked it, and it was well written. I read it in less than a day, but I think some of the more depressing material could have been left out and more humor could have been added in. It needed some more lightness.
