This novel was a departure from my normal contemporary or paranormal romances. I haven’t read any historical romances in quite some time, but when Deb at thereadingchick.com sent me a box of books and goodies, this one jumped out at me first.

This was a decent romance about an unconventional heroine and a grieving hero. Lucy is being forced into society with a grand season that she never wanted. She reads her late spinster aunt’s diaries and slips out to run away to the crumbling cottage in Cornwall that her aunt has left her. Reclusive Lord Branston has tried to purchase the cottage from her father, and Lucy has decided she must see the property first herself before she sells it to anyone. She is suspicious of Branston’s motives. When she meets him on the train to Cornwall, she is at first untrusting but then surprised to discover she actually likes him.

Lucy went back and forth and would get upset over something and not trust Thomas and then realize she was wrong and would like him even more. She was reading her aunt’s diaries the entire book, and she at first thought she wanted to be a spinster like her aunt, alone and independent. Then she realized that that life wasn’t for her, but she wasn’t sure what she really wanted, only that she didn’t want to get married. She got into some crazy situations, a few quite scandalous for her day. I skimmed a few parts, eager to get to the HEA. The scene just outside the ballroom was really a bit over the top, but overall, this was a decent read.

Give me a reason to read
A devastating male lead
I want a heroine tough
Some action a wee bit rough

Genres? Tried pretty much all
Romance is my siren call
I hate drama and horror
One’s scary, one’s a borer

Romance sub-genres wide spread
Billionaires, bikers, undead
Historical and modern
They all seem to get a turn

Motorcycle gangs are fine
I love a bad boy; he’s mine
If he has a heart of gold
Totally, completely sold

Rock stars are my kryptonite
Guitars and pants they keep tight
I love their bands and their life
It’s all glamour, glitz and strife

Vampires, weres, witches are cool
Their strength, speed, skills all rule
The undead scene in the night
Just not too graphic, alright?

I hate excess violence
It makes me sick and too tense
An animal dies, I’m done
A happy ending is rule one

I prefer love and romance
That sweet, tense, intricate dance
Not too much angst or delay
They just cause stress and dismay

I want a book I can’t drop
One that consumes me full stop
That kind are seldom and rare
Is there one like that out there?

This is a different cover from the one I see on my Kindle. These models don’t match the images in my head, but then this entire novel was a mixed-up mess for me. There was no feeling of satisfaction when I finished it. 

I have such mixed feelings about this book. I think I’m leaning towards not liking it. It was frustrating. I admire the author’s ability to create a unique and diverse world of non-human beings. However, I was often confused as the hero is an Ichorian who is half-brother to a different race of beings, the Hydraians. I believe one can create the other but not the other way around, but it’s confusing. The Ichorians seem to be similar to vampires. I’m not sure at all what a Hydraian is other than immortal. I frequently had trouble telling who was who, and at times it all jumbled up in my mind.

I got annoyed with the idea that we STILL don’t know exactly what the heroine is. Everyone kept saying she wasn’t ready to hear certain things about herself. Then when she has a key piece of information about her mother that might be crucial to understanding her heritage and who or what she is, she withholds the information and never did tell anyone. I wanted to scream.

There are a lot of bad guys in this book, and it’s not always clear who could be trusted. At book’s end, the heroine volunteers for and puts herself in an extremely stupid situation. Apparently all for nothing. The person she was trying to save (the MC in book 2) is being moved out of her reach.

I hate that this novel is not a standalone. It ends on a cliffhanger with no resolution of 95% of the issues. I have book 2, but I’m not even certain I want to read it just now. I’m not sure I care enough to continue muddling my way through another frustrating read. I don’t mind series; in fact, I love them. I just need more of a happy ending when I turn the last page.

Mercy Thompson is a walker, able to shift into coyote form. She was raised by werewolves, and her various friends and acquaintances include a gremlin, a vampire, witches, and werewolves. She runs her own business as a mechanic, and her life changes dramatically when a young man on the run, a new werewolf, asks her for a job. She turns to her neighbor, the local pack alpha for help. 

I re-read this as I listened to the audiobook. I’m almost embarrassed to admit I don’t remember much of the story from my first read of the paperback years ago. Bits of the warehouse scene were all that was familiar. I liked it better this time around. The narration was amusing, especially the voices and accents, like Stefan’s and Zee’s. I have books 1-5 in paperback. Maybe I’ll finally read them now. I sat up until 3:00 to finish this one.
